As part of the museum’s redevelopment, the Saban building from 1938 will be refurbished. A bubble-shaped addition to the northern side of the existing building will be home to a 1,000-seat movie theater. It is designed to have a semi-outdoor space on top - a 1,200 m² terrace covered by a fully glazed dome, which allows a view over the skyline all the way to the Hollywood Hills.
The comfort concept developed by Transsolar ensures that the glass dome does not show negative greenhouse effects in the Californian climate. Throughout the entire year the temperatures perceived under this dome will be milder than in an unprotected outdoor space. The sun protection for the design was developed to maintain an unobstructed view over the city.
