Matthias Schuler | Honorary Doctorate Award Ceremony | KIT Karlsruhe

Matthias Schuler is being awarded the honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of teaching and research represented at the KIT Faculty of Architecture, particularly in the areas of integrated design and climate-responsive building.

The KIT writes: “(Matthias Schuler is) a pioneer of climate-responsive, energy-efficient and resource-conscious building at a time when these themes were far from ‘en vogue’ and not yet anchored in norms or standards. Already during his mechanical engineering studies at the University of Stuttgart, he addressed technologies for efficient energy use, later transferring them into architecture in an expanded sense – not as purely technical applications or add-ons, but as integral components of design-based spatial climate and energy concepts. (…) The courage shown by Matthias Schuler in pursuing and consistently developing his approach to Climate Engineering at such an early stage serves as an exemplary model for our students as well as for early-career researchers in developing their own research ideas in this field.”

The ceremony is public and will take place on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at 6:00 pm in the Fritz-Haller Lecture Hall at the KIT Faculty of Architecture, Englerstraße 7, 76131 Karlsruhe.
