Transsolar Academy

The Academy Program is still postponed, BUT we have reached out to our network of 44 former Transsolar Academy Fellows and are mapping out new ideas on how to bring the program back to life in a new format. As always, the main driver is to increase our impact, believing that time is running short to fight climate change. Therefore. it is even more crucial to spread knowledge in the building industry because buildings are responsible for about 40% of the worldwide CO2 emission. Please stay tuned for the upcoming Transsolar Academy program with the goal to broaden our audience and outreach.

As an alternative to the Transsolar Academy, we are financing a school for "Sustainable Building Construction" in Ghana, West Africa. Studio Anna Heringer has designed a educational training campus for young men and women for the organization of the Salesians Don Boscos Mission Austria, and the trainees themselves have already started building it on-site in Tatale. The first classrooms for the agricultural school are already in place. The next step will be the construction of "our" school for "Sustainable Building Construction"; our donation makes it possible to purchase the building materials that are either not available or cannot be produced on site. In this part of the campus, apprentices will become "master builders in mud construction" and will also learn to install electrical systems and water pipes. The campus will be built gradually by the students; dormitories for students and teachers and utility buildings will follow this first building. We already had the opportunity to advise on climate engineering. The aim of the education campus is to enable young people from the villages of the region to learn a profession that will allow them to work in the area, rather than being forced to migrate elsewhere.

Projects

At the beginning of 2020, everything seemed to be in order, but then the pandemic hit and with it the restrictions that strongly influenced our training program: Online training and screen presence instead of a dynamic work flow within the various Transsolar groups and peers with direct feedback characterized this Academy very much. Distance instead of exchange with colleagues, because that was only possible in a significantly reduced way.

Virtual meetings have a significantly reduced quality. Spontaneity is rather absent, cultural exchange is minimized. The Fellows of the 7th Academy made the best of it, despite all the additional difficulties that come with home office and VPN work on top of all the other problems of everyday life in a foreign country.
