Under the title BREEZE INN – POP UP & COOL DOWN, students from the Design-Build seminar at Studio Schmidbaur, Department of Experimental Architecture/Building Construction at the University of Innsbruck, in collaboration with Daniel Kiehlmann, Stefan Holst and Volkmar Flamm (Architect from Innsbruck) developed a microclimatically effective intervention for Geiwi Square.
The project was created as part of a design-build prototyping semester and builds on insights from previous years, particularly the installation developed last year. The focus was on improving the quality of stay in this highly sealed campus area, which is considered a pronounced urban heat island.
Targeted measures such as shading structures, greenery, and evaporative cooling create localized cooling effects and extensive shaded areas. In this way, point-based “instant cool spots” are generated, making the square usable even on hot days and enabling new qualities of outdoor stay.
The installation was realized as part of the Week of Diversity at the University of Innsbruck, is included in the official program, and will remain in place throughout the summer. It provides a comfortable place to stay for students, staff, and visitors, and is already being intensively used shortly after completion.
Additional events will take place alongside the project, and visitors are warmly invited to attend:
Wednesday, June 17 | 1:00 – 4:30 PM
On Wednesday, as part of the event “Build smart against the heat” organized by Energieagentur Tirol, a lecture will be followed by an excursion to Geiwi Square. Registration is required.
Thursday, June 18 | 2:00 PM – evening
On Thursday, the Institute of Design. Studio 2 will host a symposium featuring lectures, concerts, a skate workshop, and other activities. No registration required.
The pavilion will remain in place throughout the summer.
