The festival titled “The Future of Architecture" by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) started in Toronto last Saturday. Leaders and emerging talents in architecture and design, students, faculty and allied professionals are meeting up in five days of workshops, tours, and many other events.
Today, Baird Sampson Neuert Architects (Barry Sampson and Jesse Dormody) and Transsolar KlimaEngineering (Erik Olsen) will present a case study of the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study and Research Building at York University. With a building-wide natural ventilation system driven by one of the largest solar chimneys in Canada, the project integrates climate-responsive passive and low-energy active systems in a highly efficient ‘hybrid’ approach. The facility operates with very low energy use intensity, has significantly reduced carbon emissions, and provides a healthy and comfortable interior environment for occupants.
