Matthias Schuler | Opening of the TITLIS Summit Station Tower, Switzerland

Matthias Schuler joined the opening of the new TITLIS Tower, located at an altitude of 3,020 meters in the Swiss Alps. The renovated tower is the first completed element of the larger Titlis 3020 development, which includes the transformation of the summit station and surrounding visitor facilities.

Transsolar has contributed an integrated climate and energy concept that responds to the site's unique alpine conditions while making use of local resources. One key strategy is the recovery of energy from visitors’ greywater. Through a heat pump system, this energy can be used both to support snow production for glacier protection and to provide heating for the buildings.

The future summit station will also rely heavily on passive environmental design. Its large central atrium is conceived as a winter garden that captures solar gains, helping to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures even when outdoor conditions drop to –20°C.

The opening of the TITLIS Tower marks an important milestone in the long-term transformation of the mountain destination and demonstrates how architecture, engineering and environmental performance can be carefully integrated in one of the most challenging building locations in the Alps.
