Krista Palen | From the Ground Up | CTBUH 2025

On October 6, Krista Palen will take part in the CTBUH 2025 International Conference “From the Ground Up – Tall Buildings and City-Making” in not one, but two sessions.

She will first join the workshop “Learning from Limberlost: Mass Timber Techniques,” which explores policies, projects, and design practices that maximize social interaction, promote the use of recycled and sustainable materials, and strengthen connections to wider city networks and infrastructure. Transsolar's recently completed Limberlost Place will serve as a central case study, and Krista will share innovations in the building’s façade and mechanical system that point the way toward more resilient and low-carbon buildings.

Later that day, Krista will present “Passive Strategies for Near-Zero Operational Carbon” as part of the Systems Award Presentation, featuring the CSCEC Science and Innovation Building in Guangzhou, China. She will demonstrate how natural ventilation can be achieved in a tall building through seamless integration of architecture, façade, and mechanical systems — reducing operational carbon while enhancing occupant well-being.
