The Singapore-based architecture firm WOHA created an innovative contribution with their Singapore Pavilion to the Sustainability District at World Expo 2020 Dubai. Led by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and produced by Radius Experiential International, the pavilion was built on one of the smallest plots of the entire event—yet it transformed the barren desert landscape into a lush, green oasis.
At the heart of the design was an interplay of trees, vertical gardens, and hanging vegetation that offered visitors an immersive nature experience. With 517 photovoltaic panels and an integrated groundwater desalination system, the temporary structure achieved net-zero energy and water consumption. Most materials used were recyclable or reusable.
Three “Experience Cones” guided guests through distinct thematic worlds: Singapore’s spirit of innovation, its renowned orchid collection, and a multisensory rainforest environment. The pavilion demonstrated how architecture can respond to environmental challenges while fostering global conversations about climate change.
More than one million people visited the installation, which showcased forward-looking solutions for sustainable urban development and nature-integrated design. Although the pavilion was temporary, it left a lasting impression—illustrating how thoughtful design can inspire resilient, livable cities across diverse climates.
