Tommaso Bitossi | Climate-responsive façade strategies at AIA Conference 2027

At the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design in San Diego, Tommaso Bitossi and Tobias Keyl (GMP Architects) came together to present the session “Climate-Responsive Façades: Global Solutions & U.S. Opportunities.”

The talk examined how façade systems can actively respond to climate conditions to support energy performance, indoor environmental quality, and long-term resilience. Drawing from international case studies across Asia, Africa, and Europe, the session explored a range of design approaches—from building-integrated photovoltaics and adaptive solar shading systems to contemporary interpretations of solar chimneys.

By comparing these strategies across different climate contexts, the presentation highlighted how local environmental conditions shape façade design—and how analogous climates can be identified globally. This perspective enables the transfer of proven solutions to North American contexts, supporting both new construction and retrofit projects.

Particular attention was given to the role of façades as mediators between outdoor conditions and indoor comfort. Integrating climate-responsive systems early in the design process can influence architectural form, reduce energy demand, and contribute to net-zero targets while improving occupant comfort.

The session concluded by outlining opportunities for applying these strategies within U.S. markets, identifying climate zones where global approaches can be effectively adapted and scaled.
