The 2026–27 winter semester is beginning, and Daniel Kiehlmann is back at the University Innsbruck, department of experimental architecture. Together with Volker Flamm, he is co-teaching the seminar “Future-Oriented Energy Design,” which this semester focuses on the climate-resilient transformation of public spaces in Tyrol. Jointly with Tyrolean partners from the MountResilience project, the goal is to develop feasible and sustainable concepts for specific public spaces in Tyrol that improve the microclimate, outdoor comfort, and quality of stay.
Kickoff Event | November 6, 2026
The project kicks off with a full-day kickoff event. In the morning, the participating municipalities will present their public spaces and the specific challenges for which the students will subsequently develop concepts. In the afternoon, a small public symposium will take place featuring keynote presentations from academia and the professional field. The focus will be on climate change and climate adaptation, microclimate and outdoor comfort, landscape architecture, spatial planning, and the question of what livable public spaces might look like under future climate conditions.
Innovation Sprint | November 27–28, 2026
In late November, the students will work in small teams over two intensive workshop days to develop concrete concepts for the respective sites. They will be supported by experts and mentors from the relevant disciplines.
Finals & Judging | November 30, 2026
To conclude the event, the developed concepts will be presented to representatives of the municipalities as well as experts from academia and the professional field, discussed, and awarded prizes.
Our goal: to develop ideas that not only work on paper but also provide communities with concrete inspiration on how to make their public spaces more climate-resilient, livable, and accessible.
We wish all students and participants a great semester and look forward to seeing the results for Tyrol’s communities.
