Josef Schwarz Schule wins German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2026

The Josef Schwarz School in Heilbronn has won the German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2026. Designed by Behnisch Architekten, the school building was recognized for its holistic approach, combining ecological, social, and economic responsibility with high architectural quality.

Transsolar developed the climate and energy concept for the project. It combines geothermal energy, heat pumps, photovoltaics, and district heating with passive strategies such as natural ventilation, night cooling, and daylight use. Thermally activated clay ceilings further contribute to a comfortable indoor climate.

We are also pleased that ZERO., another project with Transsolar involvement, was nominated for the German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2026. The office building by RIEHLE KOETH combines modular timber construction with a low-tech strategy, renewable energy supply, and a high degree of spatial flexibility.

We congratulate all project partners of the Josef Schwarz School on this special recognition and are delighted to have been represented in this year’s competition with two projects.
